Abstract

This article explores the traces of Frédéric Damé (1849-1907), a French intellectual who became a prominent figure in Romania's sociocultural landscape after settling in Bucharest in 1872. Trained as a lawyer, he reinvented himself as a journalist, teacher, and lexicographer, notably authoring a reference Romanian-French dictionary. The text highlights his ambivalent reception of his work by the local elite: praised for his erudition and work ethic by I.L. Caragiale and Nicolae Iorga, he faced harsh criticism from Mihai Eminescu for his perceived lack of literary originality and political opportunism. Beyond these controversies, the study underscores Damé's complete integration and undeniable contribution to the cultural modernization of his adopted homeland.
